How Social Media Can Give Your Business the Upper Hand and Increase Your SEO

Running on a lower budget doesn’t always mean not having a competitive advantage on larger rival companies. How can that be true? Well, there’s this newfangled thing called ‘social media’, not sure if you’ve heard of it. Prior to emergence of the internet, large companies dominated most marketing channels. Their infinite funds and resources allowed them to afford the best ads and creative support. But those days are over, because the internet and social media have made it possible for small businesses to keep up with those large businesses who seem to have a never-ending budget. Social media can become your new #BFF. It won’t break the bank, and you won’t need to hire a rocket scientist for this one. No offence to the rocket scientists out there- keep up the good work.

So why should you use social media?

Customer Reach Potential.

Social media is incredibly fast paced and is quickly cementing itself as the main marketing channel. Walk into any restaurant and take note of how many people have a TV or billboard in the palms of their hands. Probably just one or two. Just kidding (hopefully?), but that brings me to the point that most likely several people will have a phone in their hands. Restaurants aren’t the only place you’ll see this; social media is accessed anytime and anywhere. What do people do when they feel awkward in the elevator with a stranger, or waiting for the doctor to call their name 30 minutes after the scheduled appointment time? Most likely scrolling through different social platforms downloaded on their smart phones to help pass the time. As of March 2017, active social media users worldwide have reached 2.8 billion, a 22% increase from the previous year (SocialMediaToday). With such a rapidly increasing number in social media users, taking advantage of these opportunities is a no-brainer.

Cost Effective.

Back then, quality advertising opportunities such as radio, TV and billboard, were blanketed by large companies. Consequently, this left smaller businesses with few options to build out their brand awareness. Today, the costs of these ads are just as expensive, and can add up before you know it. Luckily, any business can build its social presence at no cost or risk and still compete with rival’s extravagant ads. Running a Facebook ad is not only a fraction of the cost of TV, radio, and billboard, but can also provide data-driven insight to your ad’s performance.

Improve Your SEO.

I can already tell that many of you search industry mavens read this heading with curiosity. Largely because of the long-standing debate between whether social media helps SEO efforts or not. However, we have found that social media does improve SEO, but not in the way you think. The more active you are on social media, the more likely people are going to see your posts. Posting high-quality content on Facebook, Twitter, etc. has the potential for high-authority websites to link to your page, and as a result will increase your SEO rankings. Although social media does not directly contribute to Google rankings, it can help with your SEO in the big picture.

So yeah, you could say this new social media thing is kind of a big deal nowadays. Take advantage of the potential it offers and grow it into an additional asset to your business. This doesn’t mean completely cut out other media outlets, but social media can be just as effective, and help your business make it to the top of the totem pole.
